Lesser known facts :

Inspired by a Writing Prompt from Mammootty:

The film’s alternate history subplot involving the 1985 film Kathodu Kathoram includes a narrative twist about a letter that inspired the story of Mutharamkunnu P.O. (1985). In reality, this letter was sent to Mammootty and read by Sreenivasan, who used it as inspiration for Mutharamkunnu P.O. The writers of Rekhachithram creatively reassigned this anecdote to Jagadish’s character, adding a meta-layer to the alternate history without involving Sreenivasan or Mammootty directly, showcasing a clever workaround to avoid legal or casting issues.

Initial Composer Dropout:

Rahul Raj was originally announced as the music composer for Rekhachithram but opted out for undisclosed reasons before production began. Mujeeb Majeed stepped in, delivering a score that critics noted as both thunderous and occasionally overly suggestive, guiding audience emotions scene by scene. This switch wasn’t widely publicized, making it a lesser-known production detail.

Real-Life Father-Son Casting:

To enhance authenticity in scenes depicting both past (1980s) and present timelines, director Jofin T. Chacko cast real-life father-son duos, including Jenuse Mohamed, son of director Kamal, who appears in the film. This subtle casting choice added depth to the portrayal of characters across different eras but wasn’t heavily highlighted in promotional materials.

Minimal AI Usage for Mammootty’s Cameo:

While the film generated buzz for featuring an AI-generated younger Mammootty, the use of AI was deliberately restrained to avoid overshadowing the narrative. Unlike typical AI-driven recreations, the team used it sparingly, focusing on key moments to maintain authenticity and prevent the “Mammootty factor” from dominating the story. This judicious approach was a conscious choice to balance nostalgia with storytelling.

Filming Wrapped in Just Over Two Months:

Principal photography began on May 3, 2024, at Fort Kochi and concluded on July 15, 2024, a tight 73-day schedule. This rapid production for a film blending complex alternate history and mystery elements reflects the team’s efficiency, a detail often overlooked in discussions about its success.

Subtle Critique of Junior Artists’ Treatment:

The film weaves a commentary on the treatment of junior artists in the 1980s Malayalam film industry, particularly through Anaswara Rajan’s character, Rekha. Her storyline subtly highlights the exploitation and lack of recognition faced by background actors, a theme not explicitly emphasized in reviews but embedded in the narrative for cinephiles to notice.

Nostalgic Props from the VHS Era:

The production design meticulously recreated the 1980s Malayalam cinema scene, incorporating authentic props like early VHS tapes and film magazines to evoke the pre-social media fan culture. These details, such as handwritten fan letters, were crafted to immerse audiences in the era but weren’t heavily promoted as a highlight.

Underutilized Veteran Actors:

Despite a stellar ensemble including Manoj K. Jayan, Siddique, and Indrans, some critics noted that actors like Manoj K. Jayan (playing Vincent) were underutilized, with roles that alternated between menacing and underdeveloped. This critique suggests the script prioritized the central mystery over fully fleshing out supporting characters, a nuance not widely discussed.

Unconventional Alternate History Approach:

Unlike typical alternate history films that reimagine major historical events (e.g., Inglourious Basterds), Rekhachithram focuses on a seemingly minor event—the production of Kathodu Kathoram—to craft its speculative narrative. This choice, praised for its restraint to avoid blurring fact and fiction, makes it a unique experiment in Malayalam cinema, as it doesn’t alter well-documented history but builds a fictional mystery around a niche cultural moment.

Connection to Sister Abhaya Case Speculation:

While the film is not directly based on the infamous Sister Abhaya case, early speculation linked it to this real-life Kerala scandal due to thematic parallels, such as a relentless police officer and a nun’s suffering. The makers clarified that the story is fictional, but the speculation fueled pre-release buzz, particularly on platforms like Reddit, where fans debated its inspirations. This connection wasn’t heavily covered post-release, making it a lesser-known point of discussion.
